Local work

Old buildings, tall buildings and busy campuses

The western suburbs and the CBD have some of Perth’s most complex sites. Heritage school buildings have been extended many times over. Boarding houses sit next to day classrooms. CBD tenancies share stairs, lifts and assembly areas with other occupants.

Craig has drawn diagrams for schools, colleges, a TAFE, government offices, a health service and a strata manager across this area. Each diagram is drawn to AS 3745-2010, oriented to the reader and checked against how the building is actually used today. Your drawings stay on file, so when a wing is refurbished or a tenancy changes, updates are quick.

Interactive self-check

Is your evacuation diagram still compliant?

Six quick checks based on AS 3745-2010 and what Craig sees most often on WA sites.

Does every diagram have a "You Are Here" point that matches where it is mounted?AS 3745-2010 requires the diagram to be oriented to the viewer's position.

Are all current exits and paths of travel shown, with nothing that no longer exists?Blocked, locked or removed doors are the most common failure.

Is the assembly area shown correctly, including any temporary changes?Construction, transportables and new fencing often move it.

Is every extinguisher, hose reel, blanket and alarm point shown where it actually is?Equipment gets relocated during fit-outs and services.

Has the building changed since the diagram was issued?Extensions, new rooms, demountables or a changed use of space.

Is the diagram legible, with a legend, and mounted at the right height?Faded prints and missing legends are non-compliant.

Answer the six checks above

Takes under a minute. We will tell you plainly whether your diagrams are likely to stand up.

Common questions

Straight answers grounded in AS 3745-2010 and WA workplace legislation. Anything else, call Craig.

Yes. Many western suburbs campuses have older buildings with newer wings added over the years. Craig surveys each level and each addition, so every diagram shows the exits, stairs and paths of travel that actually exist now, not what was on an old plan.

Yes. We draw diagrams for individual tenancies and for whole buildings, including strata properties. Each diagram is oriented to where it hangs, shows the nearest exits and stairs, and points to the agreed assembly area, which matters when several occupants share the same evacuation routes.

Boarding houses are sleeping accommodation, so occupants may be evacuating at night and in unfamiliar conditions. We draw diagrams for each boarding level, positioned where students and staff will see them, and make sure the assembly area works after hours as well as during the school day.

Under AS 3745-2010 your Emergency Planning Committee sets a validity period for the diagrams, and the standard’s note says it should not exceed five years. Craig’s advice is simple: review at least every five years, and straight away whenever the site changes, such as a new building or a moved exit.

AS 3745-2010 sets out minimum elements, including a title, a You Are Here marker, exits, paths of travel, the assembly area, fire equipment, a legend and a validity date. Each diagram also has to be oriented to the viewer, so the layout matches what they see when they look up from the wall.

Call 1300 355 686 or send us the site address and a rough idea of the number of buildings and levels. If we have drawn your site before, your drawings are already on file, which usually makes the quote and the update quicker.
