Australian Fire Safety Standards Explained

Understanding your fire safety and emergency management obligations does not need to be complicated. This page breaks down the key Australian standards and regulations that apply to most Perth businesses and facilities, so you know exactly what is required and how CMG can help you meet it. Craig and the team handle everything from assessment through to installation — so you never have to worry about getting it wrong.

WHS Regulations 2022

Work Health and Safety General Regulations

The WHS General Regulations 2022 impose a legal duty of care on all WA businesses to maintain a safe working environment — including current evacuation diagrams, maintained fire equipment and appropriate staff training.

Non-compliance can result in improvement notices, fines from WorkSafe WA, prosecution and increased liability in the event of a workplace incident.

HOW CMG HELPS

We support Perth businesses with evacuation diagrams, emergency management planning, fire extinguisher training, evacuation training, warden and chief warden training, and spill response training.

AS 3745-2010

Planning for Emergencies in Facilities

AS 3745-2010 is the primary Australian Standard governing emergency planning for all facilities. It applies to every building, structure or workplace occupied by people — with no exemption based on building size or industry type. If people come onto your site, this standard applies to you.

Every compliant evacuation diagram must meet strict requirements under Clause 3.5.5 covering floor plan, exit locations, fire equipment placement, assembly areas, validity date and facility address. Diagrams must be positioned between 1,200mm and 1,600mm above floor level and must not be fixed to fire doors or smoke doors.

HOW CMG HELPS

Craig is one of WA’s most trusted AS 3745-2010 experts — trusted by over 200 WA schools. CMG handles everything end to end: assessment, design, supply and on-site installation.

How Often?

How Often Do You Need to Update Your Diagrams and Training?

AS 3745-2010 recommends reviewing evacuation diagrams at least every five years as best practice. The mandatory trigger however is any change to your building layout, tenancy or fire equipment — this cannot wait.

ECO members including wardens must attend skills retention every six months. All occupants should participate in emergency training at least every twelve months. An evacuation drill must be conducted at least once per year.

HOW CMG HELPS

Building Codes

National Construction Code and Building Codes

The National Construction Code sets out fire safety requirements for buildings based on their classification and use — covering fire detection systems, sprinkler systems, exit signage and firefighting equipment placement.

Building owners and managers must ensure their buildings continue to meet the code requirements they were built to, and that any changes do not compromise those requirements.

HOW CMG HELPS

We produce fire alarm block plans, EWIS block plans, fire sprinkler block plans and fire hydrant block plans to the required standard — supporting building managers, strata managers and fire authorities.
